Written by University Lab Partners | Apr 15, 2025 7:27:27 PM

In recent years, STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) have become essential pillars in driving innovation and addressing the challenges of the future. As more students pursue careers in these exciting fields, scholarships specifically for STEM studies are becoming increasingly valuable.

But what exactly are STEM scholarships, and how can high school and college students apply for them?

What is a STEM Scholarship?

A STEM scholarship is a financial award designed to support students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These scholarships aim to encourage students to enter and excel in fields that are vital to societal progress and economic development.

Whether you’re a high school senior just starting your college journey or an undergraduate looking to advance your studies, STEM scholarships are available to help you fund your education and reduce the burden of tuition fees.

They also aim to lower the barrier to entry in STEM, especially for underrepresented groups within the sciences. For instance, women have historically been underrepresented in STEM fields, prompting policymakers and advocates to focus on increasing female participation in these careers. In 2021, although 24% of U.S. workers were employed in STEM roles, only 18% of women held such positions—just 60% of the rate for men, who stood at 30%

Progressive science depends on the input of diverse individuals, and STEM scholarships can help facilitate this.

Types of STEM Scholarships

STEM scholarships can vary widely based on the level of study, specific disciplines, and the demographic background of applicants. Below are some common types of STEM scholarships:

General STEM Scholarships

These scholarships are open to students pursuing any type of degree within the STEM fields. They typically have broad eligibility requirements and are awarded based on academic merit, financial need, or other factors such as community involvement. They may require annual requirements such as GPA, course credits, or projects verifying your role in a lab.

Women in STEM Scholarships

These scholarships specifically support female students pursuing careers in STEM fields. As women continue to be underrepresented in many STEM disciplines, these scholarships aim to encourage and empower women to enter and thrive in traditionally male-dominated fields.

Minority and Underrepresented Groups Scholarships

Many scholarships are designed to support students from underrepresented racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. According to the National Science Foundation, Black or African American STEM workers make up only 8% of the total workforce, and Hispanics make up 15%. These scholarships are vital in promoting diversity in STEM studies and ensuring equitable access to educational opportunities.

Industry-Specific STEM Scholarships

Some scholarships are provided by companies, non-profits, and organizations in specific industries, such as healthcare, engineering, or information technology. These scholarships may require students to pursue a particular area of STEM and may offer internships or job placement opportunities after graduation.

Be sure to visit the financial aid section of the websites of institutions you're interested in to learn about available opportunities. Also, it can be useful to subscribe to your school’s scholarship office emails and your major or department’s research portal to ensure you don’t miss any opportunities.
  3. Non-profit Organizations and STEM Foundations: Organizations like the National Science Foundation (NSF), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and the American Association of University Women (AAUW) offer scholarships for students pursuing STEM degrees. These organizations also often provide mentorship and networking opportunities for students to engage in.
  4. High-school or College Counselors: Counselors often have access to databases, scholarship directories, and partnerships with organizations that offer financial support for STEM education. They can also assist with the application process by helping students gather required materials, craft strong personal statements, and meet deadlines.
